Garden essentials – structures every garden needs

Garden essentials – structures every garden needs

When we think about garden structures, we often think of sheds and summer houses. In this guide, we take a look at other types of garden structure and how they can work in your outdoor space.

Timber sheds

The most obvious of all garden structures, most of us have a timber shed. A practical and useful addition, sheds can store gardening equipment as well as tools, bicycles and seasonal foldaway furniture. When erecting a new shed, it’s important to site it on the correct foundations to prolong its life and, unless it is going to cover more than half your garden, you will not need planning permission. The regulations surrounding planning permission for domestic garden sheds are explained in more detail here.

Once installed, a timber shed requires little ongoing maintenance beyond treating the timber annually and ensuring it is damp-proof and the roof remains in good order.

Pet housing

Whether they care for dogs, rabbits or chickens, pet owners often need pet housing in the garden. For animals who live outdoors, such as rabbits and chickens, it is important to choose housing that is durable and hardwearing. Pressure treated timber products are rot resistant and will last for years with little more than annual maintenance checks and treatment. Bird tables also are attractive structures with a functional purpose. A beautifully crafted example will offer a place of safety for native birds to feed over the colder months, when natural food sources may be hard to find.

Storage

As mentioned above, sheds are a great form of storage but there are other things that are kept in the garden that would be better placed in dedicated storage solutions. For those with open fires and log burners, your supply of logs needs to be kept dry and well ventilated, particularly over winter. A timber log store is perfect and is available in a variety of sizes to suit available space; not only a functional addition to the garden but also a highly decorative one too!

Shelters

While not essential, a bin store is the perfect way to disguise ugly wheelie bins that may otherwise be on full view to the neighbourhood. With many homes now having multiple wheelie bins (household rubbish, recycling, dry recycling, and garden waste), bin stores are available to accommodate one, two or three wheelie bins and offer easy access combined with an attractive aesthetic.

Timber screening

Timber screens are not just for attaching to walls and fences for climbing plants! They can be used to section off areas of a garden to create zonal area for different functions. Arranged around garden furniture, a garden screen can create an inviting space to entertain or just relax. Slatted screens offer privacy without blocking out light and will add a contemporary feel to your space. Left unpainted, the screen can weather naturally; alternatively, it can be painted to enhance your garden design.
