A guide to garden gates

With a garden fence completing the look of any outdoor space, it’s essential to choose the perfect gate to complement it. Our helpful guide tells you everything you need to know!

Choosing a garden gate mainly depends on the purpose it will serve and where it will be positioned. For example, for boundary fences that provide security and privacy, a tall, solid gate will be suitable, whereas a gate positioned at the front of the property that is extending a warm welcome to visitors and guests can be shorter and perhaps decorative.

The function of a garden gate

Garden gates serve several functions and the purpose of your gate will influence the type you choose. The following are useful questions to ask before a purchase:

Does the gate need to restrict access to a property?

Will the gate offer added security, keeping young children and pets safe?

Will it be an access point to an area that is shielded from passers-by?

Will it be used to enhance the aesthetics or kerb appeal of the property?

Things to consider when choosing a garden gate

If you are replacing an old gate, the size of the existing gap needs to be considered as a new gate will need to fit between gate posts.

The design of the gate is important as it can either blend seamlessly into fencing or be used to make an impact statement on the property.

The finish of the gate. Metal gates generally have a more open look and can provide a decorative look. They offer less privacy and security than their wooden counterparts, however, and are often found in front gardens. Wooden gates are a traditional and sturdy option suitable for privacy and can be matched with existing timber fencing. Wooden gates can be stained or painted to suit their surroundings.

Cottage gate

Ideal for a countryside setting, our timber cottage gate offers a traditional aesthetic and at 900mm high, is perfect for a front garden where fencing is generally shorter.

Gate Ironwork

The ironwork you choose as the finishing touch for a new gate should complement its style and setting. Our entire range of gate ironwork is galvanised to protect against environmental conditions and some items are available in black. Our garden gate sets are a cost effective option which include hinges, a bolt and a latch. Ensuring any gate is fastened and hung securely is important and our garden gate fasteners include dead locks, bolts and traditional latches, while our garden gate hinges are offered as straight bands and T hinges.

Maintaining a wooden gate

Pressure treated gates require very little maintenance but additional applications of shed and fence wood treatment or wood stain and protector will extend the life of the gate, protecting it against year-round weathering, and can enhance its aesthetic.

Our extensive range of timber gates also includes picket gates and 5-bar gates but if you cannot find the size you need, we offer a bespoke manufacturing service for many of our styles and we will be happy to advise.
