How to install eco fencing

With eco fencing, or composite fencing, becoming an increasingly popular choice for homeowners, this handy guide tells you how to install it in your garden.

As a popular alternative to traditional timber fencing, eco fencing is an easy and straightforward system to install, with all products being completely compatible with recognised building and fencing materials. Eco boards can also be used with concrete fence posts. For more detailed information about our range of eco fencing, our article What is eco fencing? can help.

How to install eco fence posts

There are three ways to install eco fence posts and the method you choose will depend on the foundations that will be under the fence. Where there are soft foundations, eco fencing supaspikes are recommended.

Installing eco fence posts without fixings

Eco fence posts are manufactured from composite material that can be cut to size with a handsaw, making it easy to adjust the height of your posts before installation. Dig a hole at least 24” (60cm) in depth and place the post into the hole before adding concrete or postcrete to the hole. Manufacturers advise that for fences taller than 6’, cement should be poured into the fence post to waist height for stability.

Installing eco fence posts to a concrete base

When installing a fence on a concrete base, posts can be installed using an eco fencing boltdown. These have a base plate 150mm x 150mm in size which can be secured onto the concrete with M8 x 100 galvanised thunderbolts. Once the boltdown has been secured in place, the eco fence post simply slides over the top.

Installing eco fence posts into soft foundations

Galvanised supaspikes make quick work of installing eco fence posts into soft ground! Simply drive the supaspike into the ground so that the fins are 10cm below the surface and slide the post down onto the spike. Once in position, the spike can be secured by screwing the post into place.

Installing eco fence panels

Our eco fencing posts feature a slot that runs the entire length of the post, on either side. This allows eco fence panels to slide easily into place between the posts. The boards will stack uniformly one on top of the other until you reach the required height for your fence.

Finishing touches for your eco fencing

Once your fence is fully installed, an eco panel top adds the perfect finishing touch. In concave and convex styles, the panel tops are available in the same colours as the fence boards to create a coordinated or contrasting aesthetic according to preference. Add an eco fencing classic post cap and your new fence will be complete!

Eco fencing is versatile

With concrete fencing systems, different fence posts will be required depending on whether they are corner posts, intermediate posts or end posts. With the eco fencing system, however, one post can be used in any position, needing nothing more than the addition of an eco utility strip to transform it. Additionally, when replacing a timber fence that has concrete posts and gravel boards, the eco boards will slot into place between the concrete posts and sit happily on the gravel boards. Likewise, timber fencing panels can be used with an eco board as a gravel board, allowing you to switch it up if preferred.
