How to lay block paving

How to lay block paving

Block paving when correctly installed will last for over twenty years. Read on to find out everything you need to know from correctly laying the groundwork to laying the paving itself.

Laying the groundwork for block paving

As with any installation or building, good foundations are essential, and block paving is no exception. Substandard groundworks will lead to sagging or uneven paving, and may allow weeds to grow through. Groundwork can fall short of the mark when the wrong sub-base is installed of if jointing sand is not sufficiently compacted.

The importance of good groundworks for block paving

Correct groundworks will:

  • Ensure your block paving is stable and long lasting
  • Reduce the risk of your paving developing cracks
  • Reduce the risk of your paving sinking
  • Ensure your paved area is level
  • Give good drainage and reduce the chance of water settling

Laying the foundations for block paving

  • Mark out the area to be paved
  • Prepare the ground by removing all rubbish or debris
  • Dig the surface to a depth of 15cm, removing any grass, plants or weeds (including roots!)
  • Use a spirit level to endure the entire area is flat and even
  • Use a tamper to compact the soil, rechecking the area is still even afterwards
  • Add 10cm of sub base such as Type 1, and then a 2-3cm bedding layer (unbound sharp sand for concrete block paving or a moist mixture of sharp sand and cement for sandstone block paving)

Laying block paving

Lay block paving slabs 5mm proud of the base starting from a straight edge or border, to allow for tampering. If you lay the block paving straight into the bedding layer, you may have gaps in the finished paving. Once all block paving has been placed to your satisfaction, brush sharp sand across the surface of the blocks, ensuring it gets into the joints. Once this has been done, compact the paving well. Finish off by adding kiln dried or sharp sand to the surface, repeating until all joints are filled.
