The pros and cons of concrete fence posts
Where concrete fence posts are appropriate for your fencing project, they offer many benefits and few disadvantages:
They will never need to be replaced as they are completely resistant to moisture and insects.
Concrete fence posts are low maintenance – just clean with soapy water to keep them looking as good as new.
They offer the perfect aesthetic for contemporary properties.
Concrete fence posts are strong enough to withstand weather conditions in the most exposed locations.
Today there are lighter weight concrete fence posts available but they may require two people to install them. Once installed, they are difficult to move; this means you have very little room for mistakes so accurate measuring is vital. How to install concrete fence posts has lots of advice.
Concrete fence posts are not the cheapest option, and production requires a lot of water and produces high percentages of CO2 emissions.
If concrete fence posts are not for you, Witham Timber offers a choice of alternatives to suit every taste and budget.
Composite fence posts
Also known as eco fencing, composite is a popular choice that is manufactured from mainly 75% recycled materials. Pellets made from plastic waste are blended with wood fibre to create a composite material that is lightweight, yet strong and durable. Eco fence posts can be cut to length easily but be aware that the 8 feet and 9 feet posts are reinforced with a steel insert for added strength and this will need to be removed before cutting to size. Eco fence posts taller than 6 feet can be filled with cement, to reduce excess movement.
Eco fence posts are designed to coordinate with the entire eco fencing range which includes everything need to create the perfect fencing solution, from eco boards and eco panel tops, to eco utility strips and all necessary fixings. Durapost fence posts
Durapost is a brand name for a fencing system manufactured from galvanised steel with a powder coating which prevents rotting, cracking, and warping. Offered as a durable and lightweight alternative to wood and concrete, Durapost fence posts feature an innovative design which allows them to be used with timber fence panels as well as Durapost panels. In a choice of classic colours, Durapost fence posts are suitable for use in areas with high winds. In addition to carrying a 25-year warranty, Durapost fencing products are 100% recyclable.
Wooden fence posts
The most recognisable of all, wooden fence posts give a traditional aesthetic and are commonly used with timber rails or timber fence panels. Timber is a durable and long lasting natural material but it is vulnerable to the elements, and conditions such as rain can cause damage if left untreated. By comparison to other types of fence posts, timber requires ongoing and regular maintenance but will reward you with a stunning fence that will last for years.
