Using decorative fence panels in the garden

Decorative fence panels provide the perfect framework for any style of garden and, in our latest guide, we tell you exactly what they are and how to incorporate them in your garden.

Decorative fence panels

As their name suggests, decorative fence panels are just that – decorative! Where traditional fence panels, such as feather edge panels and waney lap panels, offer a more conservative aesthetic, decorative panels feature attractive designs and detailing.

How to use decorative fence panels in the garden

Although decorative fence panels can be used for demarcating property boundaries, they are the ideal solution for creating different areas, or zones, in any size garden, to make the absolute best of your space. In larger gardens, feather edge and waney lap panels are perfect for providing privacy and security, while decorative panels will provide attractive focal points when used to create areas for different uses.

Creating different areas in your garden

Splitting your garden into distinct areas with different purposes, for example an entertainment space and a place to relax, will automatically make your space feel bigger, and converting it into a multi-functional space will help you make the most of it. Using decorative fence panels to border a decked area used for dining, will create a sense of privacy while still giving visual access to the area beyond, therefore avoiding the feeling of being enclosed.

Separating two areas of your garden from each other, such as a children’s play space and a more grown up seating area, rather than screening an area off completely, will give different parts of the garden a distinct function and personality. Using decorative fence panels to achieve this allows each area to be viewed from the other, so that parents can keep an eye on younger children without being in their space.

Using decorative fence panels for boundaries

Slatted or woven decorative fence panels add a more modern look to your property when used as boundary fencing. the open construction will afford some privacy and security and can help to make a smaller space seem longer. However, this is not recommended for exposed gardens that get a lot of windy weather. Decorative fence panels with gently curving tops can help to soften a run of boundary fencing, and trellis-topped panels offer security and a sense of airiness.

Choosing decorative fence panels

Decorative fence panels are available to suit every type and style of garden and can be found with straight edge tops or curved tops. You can also choose between slatted panels or woven panels, with or without a trellis top. Complete trellis panels can be used in a similar way, to provide screening that can accommodate climbing plants, perhaps in a smaller cottage garden.
