What is porcelain paving?

The up and coming star of the outdoor paving world, porcelain paving is a popular choice with housing developers and homeowners alike. Our guide tells you everything you need to know.

What is porcelain paving?

Porcelain paving is a high end paving solution that adds a stunning aesthetic to any type of property. Porcelain tiles have a designer feel to them that will add a luxurious touch to your outside area and they are available in a selection of designs and finishes.

What is porcelain paving made from?

It is a misnomer to call porcelain paving slabs porcelain! They are in fact manufactured from a mixture of clay and sand and other minerals. The mixture is compressed and kiln-fired at extreme temperatures. The surface pattern is ink-jet printed to give the look of wood or stone

Porcelain paving versus natural stone paving

As porcelain paving is much less porous than natural stone, it doesn’t need to be sealed at the time of installation. This means it will withstand most stains which can be easily wiped away. It also means that water will not penetrate the paving stones which, in the case of natural stone, can cause damage below the surface leading to loosening of the tiles. For a homeowner, porcelain paving offers a secure solution that is long lasting.

Features of porcelain paving

  • The manufacturing process, known as vitrification, produces an extremely durable tile that has low water absorption and is incredibly strong. In sub-zero temperatures, porcelain paving is not prone to cracking.
  • The industry standard depth for a porcelain paving slab is 20mm; they can be thinner than traditional slabs thanks to their strength.
  • While porcelain paving may look like it will be slippery underfoot, particularly if wet, it is one of the safest options. At Witham Timber, we stock a range of porcelain paving by Talasey whose products have a certified slip skid rating, on a scale from 9 to 13, making them ideal for outdoor areas that will encounter wet weather.

Care of porcelain paving

Its resistance to stains and frost, as well as to the side effects from the build-up of damp conditions (moss, mould and algae) makes porcelain paving easy to maintain and clean. As with all outdoor surfaces such as patios or decked areas, your paving should be swept clear of debris (leaves, grass etc.) on a regular basis. Beyond that, porcelain paving requires nothing more than hot, soapy water to keep it in tip top condition.

Benefits of porcelain paving

  • Easy to clean
  • No need for sealant
  • Resistant to sub surface erosion
  • Durable and long lasting
  • Will not fade in the sunshine
  • Non-slip, lightly textured surface gives better safety when wet
  • Scratch resistant
