We often publish articles that explain How to repair a broken fence or how to repair a wind damaged fence and reinforce wooden fence posts, but how do you know when the time for repairs has passed and your logical next step is a new fence? We take a look at the most common reasons to stop repairing your fence, and replace it.
My fence is leaning
Environmental factors such as rain and wind, plus the effect these have on ground shifting, can impact a timber fence, causing it to lean. Where isolated timber fence panels are leaning, it is possible to repair them or the fence posts, but if the fence is leaning along its entirety, this can mean damage that is beyond repair.
Fence rot
Regular maintenance alongside a regular application of a good quality preservative such as Protek Shed and Fence Wood Treatment will prevent the rapid onset of rot. However, over time nature will win out and rot will set in, usually starting with the timber closest to the ground. Once rotting is established, a fence will deteriorate rapidly, becoming weaker. Generalised rotting in fence posts and panels is therefore a good indicator that it is time to replace the fence.
Split fence panel
Split or missing timber fence boards and timber fence panels give your fence an unsightly appearance, pose a danger to the safety of children and pets, and compromise the level of security provided for your property. A single board can be replaced, but several are a sign that you need to consider renewing the whole fence.
Repairing an old fence
Even the most well maintained timber fence will eventually succumb to the rigours of old age! Wear and tear from children, pets, the weather and a host of other factors, will take their toll and you will reach the point where it is no longer cost effective to carry out repair after repair. A new fence will be cheaper going forwards, which will totally update your property and give increased security, as, when a fence has reached this point, the chances are that it will also have lost any aesthetic appeal it once had.
